Sweet Cherry BBQ Sauce

Nanking cherries are out in full force in my backyard, and this year, I decided to make a tasty BBQ sauce with them, rather than just eating them.

I added some Evans cherries from the freezer for added flavour. DSC_0239

I boiled the cherries down with the sugar to release their juices. Then I strained them. DSC_0240

Back on the stove, I boiled it down some more, and added the seasoning. DSC_0243Here it is, all boiled and thick.

DSC_0244I popped it into a mason jar while still hot, and put the lid on, so it could seal.

DSC_0247That evening, I made ribs on the BBQ, slathered in sauce. They were delicious!

Sweet Cherry BBQ Sauce (Courtesy of Dinner with Julie)

You will need:

8 cups Nanking and Evans cherries, washed
Β½ cup sugar
Β½ tsp ground ginger
1 tsp onion powder
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp mustard powder
1 tsp kosher salt
Β½ tsp black pepper
1 cup brown sugar

In a large saucepan combine cherries and sugar. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until cherries have given up their juice. Remove from heat and push through a sieve to remove skins and pits. Return cherry juice to saucepan over medium heat, add all the dry ingredients, stir well and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer. Continue to simmer until slightly thickened. Cool and refrigerate in a sealed container.
